Background and Core Values
The Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium (PCIC) began as a project within the Canadian Institute for Climate Studies (CICS), established as a result of a May 2005 workshop of producers and users of climate information. Early consortium members included the University of Victoria, BC Ministry of the Environment and BC Hydro. PCIC also garnered support through various contracts and partnerships with researchers and stakeholder representatives from academic and government research labs, and local communities. Early efforts focused on Hydrologic Impacts (with BC Hydro) and local community climate impact assessments.
By July 2008 it was clear that the consortium model was viable and CICS made the decision to legally change its name and restructure its Board of Directors to confirm the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium as a legal entity. The first PCIC Board of Directors meeting was held on September 15, 2008.
The restructuring coincided with an announcement by the BC government that sustained funding for PCIC would be available through an endowment to the University of Victoria.
At PCIC we recognize the strength in working together towards a common goal and are committed to providing a level of service that adheres to the following core values defined in the PCIC Strategic Plan 2009-2013:
Quality
We ensure that our methods are current and relevant, and that the implications and limitations of our results are clear. We take the initiative to solve problems and eliminate errors in order to produce robust results.
Collaboration
We work with researchers to provide new solutions for practical problems, and with stakeholders to target our applied research. This collaboration is an integral part of PCIC and benefits all parties involved.
Respect
We listen to the needs of others and value their opinions.
Sustainability
We know that human activity has had a major impact on the environment and we strive to set an example of wise use of resources.
Balance
We are dedicated to PCIC’s mission, and PCIC supports our professional development. We excel in our roles by balancing our professional and personal lives.
