Western Arctic Weather Data

The Western Arctic Weather Data page provides access to observations of weather and climate variables (such as temperature and rainfall amounts) for the Northwest Territories and Yukon from the metnorth database maintained by PCIC. Locations of the observing stations are shown on an interactive map of the northwestern Canada. Users can zoom and pan to a region of interest, learn about the stations that are located in the region, filter the displayed stations based on observation dates, weather element, observing agency, region, and more.

ABOUT THIS DATASET

In addition to observations, users may download station meta-data that describes station location, available variables, observing agency and other basic information. The data available from the application are part of a dynamic database.

New data are incorporated into the database from:

  • Environment and Climate Change Canada,
  • the Department of Fisheries and Oceans,
  • Parks Canada,
  • the Geological Survey of Canada,
  • the NWT Department of Transportation,
  • the NWT Environment and Natural Resources Air Quality,
  • the NWT Environment and Natural Resources Fire,
  • the NWT Environment and Natural Resources Forestry,
  • the NWT Environment and Natural Resources Water,
  • Yukon Abandoned Mines,
  • the Yukon Avalanche Association,
  • the Yukon Energy Corporation,
  • Yukon Highways and Public Works,
  • Yukon Parks,
  • the Yukon Research Centre,
  • the Yukon Research Centre,
  • the Yukon Territories Government,
  • Yukon Water Resources,
  • Yukon Wildland Fire Management,
  • the British Columbia Forest Service,
  • Wilfred Laurier University,
  • CasCom Communications,
  • Ekati Diamond Mine,
  • Snap Lake Diamond Mine DeBeers,
  • Private industry data providers
  • The Climate Analysis and Monitoring theme updates the database on an hourly, near real-time basis and with non real-time data on a semi-monthly or as-available basis, depending on the source. The page also provides access to climatological averages from stations where sufficient data were available for their calculation. PCIC is actively working on quality control and homogenization efforts and will update the data when these processes are complete.
