What keeps us from generating actionable permafrost information
This talk will be held online via Zoom Meetings. Please use the registration form below to get attendance information.
Much of Canada—and the world—rests on permafrost, yet we rarely see it. As it continues to thaw, its impacts will reach us all, though in different ways. Preparing for this future means generating knowledge about what lies ahead. So, what’s keeping us? This presentation explores the barriers, motivations, and strategies for producing actionable permafrost information to support adaptation in a changing world.
Bio:
Stephan Gruber is the Scientific Director of NSERC PermafrostNet and CREATE LEAP. He is a Coordinating Lead Author for Canada’s upcoming Changing Climate Report, and served as a Lead Author and drafting team member for the Summary for Policymakers of the IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate. He was also Co-Editor-in-Chief of The Cryosphere. Stephan’s research supports forward-looking decisions at the intersection of climate, permafrost, and people. To this end, he develops methods to measure and predict permafrost change and explores how observational and simulation data can be transformed into actionable information for adaptation. Stephan has 30 years of field experience in a wide range of polar and high mountain environments. He joined Carleton University in 2013 as Canada Research Chair in Climate Change Impacts/Adaptation in Northern Canada, following appointments at the University of Zurich (Switzerland) and Université de Savoie (France).
